Suites: There is nothing more relaxing at the end of the day than retiring to the serenity of one of Gunyah’s beautifully-appointed suites. Every room features a private ensuite bathroom. The beds are deliciously comfortable and are dressed in the best Italian linen with snug wool underlays and electric blankets on all beds. All rooms are light, warm and sunny and have distinctly different views of the alps, the hills and the surrounding countryside. Choose from our private Verandah Room, sunny Garden Room, Port Hills room and the delightful Orchard Room. The Verandah Room The Verandah Room, which has private access to the upstairs verandah, has views over the front garden and in winter over the snow-covered alps. This sunny and spacious room is decorated in rich gold and navy blue and features a superb mottled kauri dressing table, rimu chairs from the old Dunedin courthouse and a stunning chest of drawers made of kohekohe, a New Zealand native tree. The Garden Room The Garden Room is located on the sunny north-west aspect of the house overlooking the croquet lawn and the surrounding established gardens. Its décor is a luxurious light gold with rich original wood panelling in the bathroom. Its colonial New Zealand furniture includes superb examples in native woods. The room can be arranged either with a super king bed (perfect for tall guests), or as two single beds. The Port Hills Room This room takes its name from the view of the Port Hills that can be seen from its windows, and it also looks out over the garden, the Lodge’s original granary, stables and orchard. It is decorated in antique gold and green and its 19th century furniture includes a rare kauri chest and a fine marquetry specimen table. The room has one queen sized bed. The Orchard Room The delightful Orchard room is located on the eastern aspect of the house and overlooks the orchard, granary and stables and has views to the Port Hills. It is furnished with a queen sized bed and houses a magnificent wardrobe, by famous New Zealand cabinetmaker William Norrie, made of New Zealand native woods and a very early New Zealand cedar and rimu table. Dining: Artist, author and gourmet Samuel Chamberlain once said: “The gentle art of gastronomy is a friendly one. It hurdles the language barrier, makes friends among civilised people, and warms the heart…” In the dining room at Gunyah Country Estate you will be treated to the sumptuous tastes of the freshest local fare prepared by our European chef. Every detail and refinement is catered to, so that you can relax and enjoy the delights of your meal in a warm and convivial environment. The South Island of New Zealand produces some of the richest seafood found anywhere - and Canterbury, the local region, is renowned for its lamb, venison and salmon. Our chef uses only the best of local ingredients, complemented by organically grown vegetables and herbs. Coffee and drinks are usually taken in the drawing room or on the verandah. In the colder months, one of the most enjoyable experiences is swapping tales of the day’s adventures in front of a roaring fire. Breakfast is a most pleasurable occasion, be it on the sun-soaked verandah in summer time, or in the cosy library for that private weekend away. In winter time, breakfast in front of a cheerful fire offers a warm and hearty start to the day. At the table you will find homemade preserves from the old style fruit still grown in the house orchard, locally harvested honey, farm fresh eggs and a variety of little surprises that our chef delights in preparing. For dinner, the style is French or Northern Italian, using the bountiful local fare to create menus that are truly extraordinary. The cellar, which is original to the house, contains an excellent selection of New Zealand wines. Dinner at Gunyah Country Estate is a table d'hôte of four courses with a complimentary pre-dinner drink.
